Global health promotion efforts for achieving the UN 2030 agenda for Sustainable Development
Lee Myoung-Soon

Abstract
This paper reviews the UN 2030 Agenda for sustainable development, and reflects upon recent global health promotion efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Methods: The essay approaches health promotion related to sustainable development through UN documentation on SDGs (UN, 2015); the Shanghai Declaration on promoting health in the 2030 agenda for sustainable development (WHO, 2016); the Shanghai Consensus on Healthy Cities (WHO, 2016); and other related documents and materias on health promotion efforts at the global level. In addition, we analyzed the 3rd basic plan for sustainable development (2016~2035) and the Sustainable Development Act of the Republic of Korea to identify approaches and strategies to achieve the SDGs in Korea. Results: The new UN agenda consists of 17 Sustainable Development Goals, including SDG 3, 'Healthy Life and Well-Being' and 169 targets. The goals and targets are integrated, indivisible, and comprehensive, encompassing the three dimensions of sustainable development: the economic, social, and environmental. The SDGs provide a critical opportunity to address the interconnectedness between health goals and the other sustainable development goals. Global health promotion efforts can be summarized as follows: firstly, efforts to make policy-makers around the world recognize health as a shared social goal and a political priority; secondly, developing transformative health promotion strategies to achieve the SDGs, including good governance for health, a healthy cities approach, and health literacy; and lastly, efforts to recognize healthy cities and communities as platforms for health and sustainable development at the local level. The basic plan for implementing the SDGs in Korea needs to be aligned to the UN SDGs in terms of the latter¡¯s targets and global indicators. Conclusions: Reflecting on health promotion efforts to achieve the UN SDGs at the global level and in Korea, recently strong world-wide health promotion efforts have been made to position health promotion approaches and strategies within the SDGs. At the same time, the importance of health promotion efforts related to achieving SDGs have not been recognized enough within Korea. To help transform our world, health promotion efforts in Korea should more closely align to global efforts aimed at achieving the UN SDGs.
